Texas Community Project will continue to lead local efforts to protect and preserve our natural resources, and to set aside and develop parks and trails within both rural and urban environments for relaxation and recreation. TCP is working to enhance access to those areas for all of our citizens regardless of economic status.

Keeping Texas Green

The Texas Legislature in May 2001 voted to increase funding levels for Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) by $10 million, and directed the agency to inventory the state’s land conservation holdings. On November 6, 2001, Texas voters will also have the opportunity to approve a bond sale of $100 million to enable TPWD to catch up on its deferred maintenance backlog. Texas ranks near the bottom among all states in per capita spending on green and open spaces, and more available land disappears each year to suburban sprawl. TCP supports increased funding for TPWD, and our members wrote hundreds of letters to legislative leaders during the session calling on them to implement a comprehensive land conservation program for the benefit of future generations. TCP will be actively supporting approval of the bonds for TPWD this November.
